16th CENTURY TAPESTRY
HIGHLIGHTS AUCTION
Dedham, MA – On
Sunday, June 1st, Grogan & Company Fine Art Auctioneers and
Appraisers conducted their annual June auction, comprised of American
and European Paintings, 18th through 20th century
Furniture and Decorative Works of Art, Silver, Jewelry and Oriental
Rugs, Carpets and Tapestries from local estates and collections.
The highlight of the
auction came towards the end of the sale, when a 16th century
Flemish Feuilles de Choux
Tapestry, one of five tapestries from a prominent Boston institution,
sold to a European phone bidder after competitive bidding between 10
phone lines and the internet for $92,000, far above it’s $5,000-10,000
pre sale estimate. Feuilles de Choux tapestries first appeared in Europe
in the early 16th century and are distinctive for their
broadleaf tropical vegetation said to have been influenced by drawings
brought home by European travellers to the tropics. A Fine Tabriz
Carpet sold to benefit Gore Place, brought $36,800, the second highest
price of the sale, against a $7,000-10,000 pre sale estimate.
A pair of 19th
century gouache portraits depicting the Durfee Boys from the
School of William Prior, exceeded their expectations and tied for
the top art result, selling for $26,450 against a $3,000-5,000 estimate
and The Fruit Seller, an oil on canvas by 19th century
painter Charles Baum of Egg Harbor, New Jersey, generated a bevy of
phone activity, also selling for $26,450, against at $3,000-5,000
estimate. The European art highlight, View of the Bog, Donegal,
an oil on canvas by the 19th century Irish artist James H.
Craig, sold for $12,650, against a $7,000-10,000 pre sale estimate and
Japanese artist Tsuguharu Foujita’s color etching, Sewing Notions,
sold for $4,600 against a $300-500 estimate.
Internet bidding was
strong and represented 15% of the total sales including Nancy Maybin
Ferguson’s Street by the Sea, a small oil on board, which sold
for $14,375. A 19th century Turkish Sword estimated at
$800-1,200 sold to an internet bidder for $7,475 and a Louis Vuitton
Trunk, estimated at $1,000-1,500 sold for $6,325, also via the
internet.
The furniture and
decorative works of art highlights included an Aaron Willard Federal
Mahogany Shelf Clock, which sold over the phone for $16,675 (esti mate:
$8,000-12,000) and an 18th century Chippendale Tiger Maple Six Drawer
Tall Chest sold for $10,350, against a $6,000-8,000 estimate.
European furniture buyers competed for a pair of Adams Style Crème
Painted and Parcel Gilt Console Tables, which sold to $13,800
($6,000-8,000 estimate) and an Italian Baroque Carved Walnut Refectory
Table, which sold for $6,325 ($1,000-1,500 estimate).
Jewelry and Silver
highlights included a 14 inch Victorian Yellow Gold and Pearl Necklace,
which sold for $5,175 and an American Silver Repousse Decorated Bowl by
